Reducing negative emotions surrounding memories

A recent article listed on the Science Daily website details a study that used the drug metyrapone to reduce negative emotion surrounding bad memories. Metyrapone significantly reduces cortisol (the stress hormone), which is apparently involved in memory recall. By decreasing cortisol levels during recall of bad memories, the re-writing of negative emotions is reduced during the time of recall. The application of this kind of treatment is obvious, PTSD, rape and trauma victims, etc., but apparently the drug is no longer produced commercially.
